Alright, I got a little bored again in the late hours of the night and decided to put something together using some assets already lying around. I'm actually starting to like this scene so I think I might take it further and do something neat with it.

Home Sweet Home Revisited

Got kinda bored and did some post editing to my Unearthly 08' entry 'Home Sweet Home'. Updated the lighting and rocks, though with all the post editing you can barely tell. I always imagined this scene being on a beat up Polaroid or post card. This is something I've kind of been messing around with on the side. As time goes on, this scene becomes more and more obsolete and is starting to become one of the weaker images in my portfolio. My skills have grown a little bit since I created this scene, especially in regards to rock creation. So I decided I'd update it just a bit so I could hold onto it a little while longer. I'll eventually post some real renders of the updated scene.

Brawl Competiton

So it was that time again, where I retreat to the dark cave I call an office and work work work away into the late hours of the night. Polycount held a competition for both Character and Environment Artists. The brief was to take a stage or character from any fighting game and re-imagine it. I chose to do a stage from Samurai Shodown. I played that game into the ground when I was a kid and wanted to pay some sort of tribute. The stage I chose belonged to the Mayan warrior TamTam. For each of these competitions I participate in I try to identify what skills I lack in and use it as an excuse to improve. I've haven't done much vegetation and jungle type scenery so this is why the idea was appealing. Anyway... less talk more show... here are the results:

Got bored and did a speed sculpt of something random. Didn't really know what I wanted to do so I just started with a sphere and ended up with a Fat demon pig... thing... Initial speed sculpt took me about 3 hours, but then I went back and tweaked a few things for about an hour or so.

Initial speed sculpt 3hrs. I wasn't completely happy with the sculpt when I cut myself off from working on it. Some features just needed a bit of tweaking. The neck felt a little to thin and saggy for a fat guy, the sealed eye didn't look very believable, and the horns needed a bit of material work.

I did this a really long time ago... Around the time that Dominance War 3 had ended. I've just never had it up anywhere for people to see. A friend of mine (Mike Kime) for weeks, kept talking about making a Guile Bust (!!!which was awesome!!!) and it just got me itching to do a Street Fighter bust as well. I was bored one day and I had a base mesh of a bald dude that I created for Dominance War so it just clicked:

Bald dude base mesh + boredom = Dhalsim

...Makes sense to me... but some of you might think "Why not Sagat?" Well that's simple enough, the equation for Sagat would be:

(Bald dude base mesh + boredom + Spicy Thai) Anger = Sagat

But since my stomach was not feeling the effects of Spicy Thai Food nor was I angry, it turned out to be Dhalsim. It's really all in the math...

Anyway... I'm no character artist and there are a bunch of things wrong, but I don't care... This was fun and reminds me that some times you just need to let go and let the artistic side take over for the day.

So I'm a big time Gears of War fan and with all the new concept art coming out for Gears 3, I just couldn't help myself. Did this a while back. I haven't really done much with it, but I'd say the high-poly is close to being complete. With everything I'm doing these days, I'm not sure when I'll be able to come back to this.

The latest Blue Canvas has hit the shelves. I have a 2 page standard feature showcasing some of my artwork. All of which you can find on this blog, but this time in a fancy magazine! My good friend and amazing concept artist Eric Ryan is also in it. He actually has a 6 page extended feature that follows directly after mine. I'd say buy the magazine just to see his stuff, because it's awesome. You can find it at Barnes & Noble and Borders for $6.99.

New Job, New city!

So I've left the mountain views and cityscapes of Los Angeles to come here to Plano, TX! I just recently started my new job at Gearbox Software and I have to say it's pretty awesome. Great people, great project, great opportunity. Can't wait to ship some awesome games with this team!

Unearthly Challenge

This was for an annual video game art competition know as Unearthly Challenge. My goal with this image was to portray an element of good in a post apocalyptic setting. I tried to by making the environment feel like it was lived in by a family. Which was the significance of a few of the traffic signs and the chalk drawings. The warm lighting and god rays also helped it feel like a 'good' scene. The scene ended up getting 4th place overall. Considering the fact that I was going up against teams of 2 and 3 artists, I feel pretty good about the ranking. This scene was created using 3D Studio Max, Adobe Photoshop, Zbrush, CrazyBump, and the Unreal Engine 3.
